Patent Cooperation Treaty

Intellectual Property Treaty

Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which makes it possible to initiate the patent granting process in over 150 countries with a single application.

Before the PCT, inventors had to file separate patent applications in each country where they desired protection. This was a complex, expensive, and time-consuming undertaking involving multiple filings, translations, and fees. The PCT addresses these challenges by offering a streamlined process.

The PCT does not grant an "international patent" directly; rather, it provides a unified filing and search procedure that simplifies the process of obtaining national or regional patents in multiple jurisdictions.
