GENEVA: The UAE has signed two key agreements with Spain and Morocco to bolster the intellectual property ecosystem.

The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism formally signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office and the Morocco’s Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC) during the 66th WIPO Assemblies in Geneva.

The MoUs aim to enhance the UAE’s intellectual property infrastructure and align it with global best practices. The signing of the agreement is also expected to reinforce the country’s drive to become a regional innovation hub and knowledge‑based economy.

The agreements primarily focus on the digital transformation of IP systems, exchange of technical cooperation, talent development, streamlined coordination in industrial property and patent registration, and the integration of advanced technologies, especially AI, to optimise patent search and classification processes.

The UAE–Morocco MoU reflects deeper momentum in their bilateral economic ties, which already include strong investment flows. Morocco hosts numerous UAE-linked companies across various sectors, including trade, energy, real estate, and industry.

The UAE–Spain MoU similarly builds on growing economic collaborations, offering technical knowledge exchange in IP management and digitalisation with one of Europe’s major IP institutions.

The MoUs are expected to accelerate the digitization of IP services in the UAE, improving accessibility, efficiency, and international interoperability and adding moreefficient and secure protection mechanismsfor innovators and investors.

They are also likely to support the development of human capital via joint training programs, workshops, and exchanges with Spanish and Moroccan IP authorities.

The agreements also lay the groundwork for joint projects, pilot initiatives, and technological exchange, particularly in patent processing, classification, AI‑driven analytics, and compliance benchmarking.

With enhanced technical exchanges, streamlined registration systems, and shared best practices, these agreements promise to advance both economic diversification and global integration.
