An industrial design protects the ornamental or aesthetic aspect of an article, such as its shape, pattern or configuration.  The 2021 reform extended UAE protection from 10 to 20 years with substantive novelty examination now required before registration.

1. Registration. The use of a trademark registration is the factor that will determine ownership of a trademark in the UAE and most of the GCC states, irrespective of who first used or applied a name, logo or invention. In several Western common law countries, it is possible for unregistered rights to be acquired by prior use alone
2. National-Only Patents. A single application to the GCC Patent Office, now does not lead to a patent for all six state members. Following the 2021 change, the office evaluates requests on behalf of any member state indicated by the applicant, and the patent granted only protects the invention in that country.
3. Arabic Filings. The UAE regulation mandates the submission of Arabic documents in trademark and patent applications, including translated specifications and other supporting documents. Most IP offices in the West process in one language only. Translations at this filing stage are typically not required. 
4. Free Zone Layers. Depending on the free zone in which they operate, UAE free-zone businesses may face federal and additional registration steps, in addition to enforcement procedures. Most legal systems in the west do not have a similar concept since IP law applies uniformly across the country.
5. Criminal Penalties. In the GCC, counterfeiting and infringement can lead to criminal prosecution including fines and prison terms, as well as civil claims. In most Western jurisdictions, infringement disputes are treated as civil matters, with criminal measures applying only to serious counterfeiting.
