Singapore Treaty

The Singapore Treaty streamlines and standardises administrative procedures for trademark registration, building upon the 1994 Trademark Law Treaty to account for advances in technology. It is broadly applicable to any type of mark eligible for registration under the laws of a Contracting Party.

Notably, the Singapore Treaty is the first international agreement on trademark law to explicitly recognise non-traditional marks. It applies to both traditional and non-traditional marks, including:

  • Three-dimensional shapes, holograms, colours, position marks, and movement marks.
  • Sounds, scents, tastes, and textures.

This comprehensive approach reflects the Treaty’s aim to accommodate evolving branding methods and ensure a consistent framework for trademark registration across jurisdictions.
