Rome Convention

The Rome Convention provides international protection for three categories of rights holders: performers, producers of phonograms, and broadcasting organizations.

The minimum duration of protection under the Convention is 20 years, calculated from the end of the year in which:

  • The fixation was made (for phonograms and performances within phonograms).
  • The performance occurred (for unrecorded performances).
  • The broadcast took place.

Despite this minimum, many national laws now extend protection to 50 years, particularly for phonograms and performances.
