WIPO Convention

The Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO Convention) is one of the key IP treaties that established the WIPO. 

The WIPO Convention was signed at Stockholm on July 14, 1967, entered into force in 1970 and was amended in 1979. 

WIPO, an intergovernmental organisation, became a specialised agency of the United Nations system in 1974. 

The Convention established the two main objectives of the WIPO:

1. Promote the protection of intellectual property worldwide.
2. Ensure administrative cooperation among the intellectual property Unions established by the treaties that WIPO administers.

The WIPO Convention also established the three organs of the WIPO:

• WIPO General Assembly.
• WIPO Conference.
• WIPO Coordination Committee.
