UAE and US Strengthen Patent Cooperation at WIPO Geneva

GENEVA: The UAE and the United States have signed a statement of intent to launch a programme aimed at improving the efficiency of intellectual property (IP) services, specifically the patent approval procedures.

The agreement was signed at Geneva on the sidelines of the 66th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

As part of the programme, the UAE Ministry of Economy & Tourism and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will collaborate to expedite patent grant procedures in the UAE.

How the UAE Patent Fast-Track Program Benefits Inventors?

The UAE patent process fast-track program aims to support inventors, startups, and businesses by ensuring faster and more reliable patent protection in the UAE, helping innovators bring ideas to market with reduced delays.

Special cooperation mechanisms will be set up to recognise positive examination results issued by the USPTO for corresponding UAE patent applications that comply with national IP laws.

UAE Patent Registration Supported by USPTO Decisions

By leveraging USPTO decisions, the UAE aims to minimise duplication, fast-track patent examination, and enhance predictability for applicants within its national patent framework.

The key beneficiaries of the patent fast-tracking programme will be patent owners from the US who file patents in the UAE and UAE-based inventors and companies who have a granted US patent and file a corresponding application in the UAE.

Global Collaboration to Boost UAE Intellectual Property Ecosystem

The international collaboration with the USPTO is expected to enhance the IP ecosystem, improve procedural efficiency, and deliver flexible, exemplary patent services in the UAE.

The focus is on developing adaptable and robust IP services and adopting advanced operational models to speed up the patent-granting procedures in the UAE.

By embracing global best practices in patent registration systems, the UAE aims to foster innovation, support entrepreneurship, and reinforce the country’s reputation as a regional IP rights protection powerhouse.

More than 1,600 delegates from 194 member states participated in the recently concluded 66th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the WIPO.

The UAE actively took part in the WIPO meetings to affirm the country’s commitment to expanding international partnerships to develop IP and support its contribution to innovation.

Apart from the agreement with the USPTO, the UAE also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WIPO to bolster cooperation in developing the UAE IP protection ecosystem.
