Saudi Arabia Geographical Indications System: Key Features & Benefits

In a landmark development for intellectual property rights, the Saudi Council of Ministers has approved the Saudi Arabia Geographical Indications system, a comprehensive legal framework dedicated to protecting Saudi products with unique regional origins. This Saudi GI Protection System is designed to preserve national heritage and reinforce the Kingdom’s global IP standing.

Approved on November 11, 2025, the new GI law in Saudi Arabia protects products—including Ajwa dates, traditional handicrafts, and other agricultural and industrial goods—whose reputation and quality are tightly connected to their place of origin.

How the Saudi GI Protection System Works

Spearheaded by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), the Saudi Arabia Geographical Indications system aims to prevent unauthorized use, fraud, and misleading claims of origin for Saudi products. Registration of Geographical Indications in Saudi Arabia will help maintain product authenticity for consumers and secure long-term rights for producers.

Under the new Saudi GI law 2025, Geographical Indications registration in Saudi Arabia will grant protection for ten years, renewable, offering lasting safeguards for producers striving to protect the unique identity of their goods. Legal mechanisms now exist to prevent the exploitation of Saudi GI products by unauthorized individuals.

SAIP, Vision 2030, and National Product Authenticity

The Saudi Arabia Geographical Indications system directly supports Saudi Vision 2030 goals by fostering economic diversification, strengthening the local production sector, and elevating the Kingdom’s competitive position in international trade.

By safeguarding the authenticity and reputation of Saudi products—such as Ajwa dates and traditional crafts—the GI registration process in Saudi Arabia offers producers a way to boost the competitiveness, export value, and marketing appeal of their goods globally.

Strengthening Saudi Exports and Regional Identity

This move gives local producers a legal tool to showcase and protect Saudi product authenticity and leverage regional advantages under the new Saudi GI Protection System.
